Seasonal Style for the Outdoors

Summer in the UK might be brief and a bit changeable, but regardless of failing to reach mediterranean temperatures, you can have a little sunshine permanently in the garden.

While we might not have a Florida heatwave, we can take inspiration from Miami and the art deco hotels that line Southbeach – a centre for the cool bridge and roller blading hipsters.
Along the golden sands and in every hotel and bar terrace, fashionable types are relaxing on brightly coloured steamer chairs and loungers, like characters in a 1950’s film.

With just a pot of paint and some budget garden furniture, you too can brighten up the back garden and bring the sea side to your patio. Rub down and paint old wooden benches and dining sets, finish with a matt varnish to seal the colour then just add Pimms!
Or, if you’re feeling the DIY vibe, create your own funky furniture with pallets. Simply stack and screw together to make tables (just add castors) or bench seating (scatter some cushions).

Even traditional rattan garden sets can be revived by the liberal addition of bright, mis-matched cushions and throws (for when it gets chilly). Placing a few lanterns around the garden will make a great atmosphere as the sun sets. Just be careful not to leave any candles burning at bed time.

And if you do like to enjoy the outdoors as evening falls, maybe invest in a fire pit – chimeneas are ‘so last year’. Make yours the centre piece and eke out the last of the rays with a glass of wine and a soft blanket, scandi style.

Our Summer might be unpredictable and short lived so get in the garden while you can and soak up every opportunity to live ‘al fresco’.
